I met Gerardo on ICQ on 16 April of 2001. It was by pure chance too as I could not sleep and was pacing the floor at 2.30am.
I made a cup of tea and switched on the computer to see if my UK friend Judi was online to talk to for a little while, but
there was nobody. Not a soul ... So I figured that there must be someone out there - after all ICQ has millions of users!
While going through 'random' I spoke with several people, including some Italians, but there was nobody who seemed remotely
interesting, and just as I was about to close down, I decided to try one more time.
It was this 'one more time' which has changed my entire life.
Once we started talking we were unstoppable. We talked for hours and I never did get to sleep at all! He was so good
at knowing what I was trying to say, as we were writing in Italian and occasionally I got myself frustrated and mixed up.
He is always so helpful and kind, always encouraging and a good advisor.
Gerardo is the love of my life and we are engaged to be married. He is highly intelligent, well-read, clever with computers,
extremely patient, incredibly romantic and a total gentleman.
He came here in November of 2001 for 3 months to visit me - and I must admit that I found this prospect rather scary.
But then, I think he did too! After all, one never knows really about the 'first encounter' ... But we needn't have worried
at all. It was just MARVELLOUS!
Since then he has made three other visits of 6 months each which again were just awesome. We are best friends. Even
in his absence, we talked to each other twice a day.
He has since been granted residency and we are now in the throes of getting all that finished so we can finally set the
date!!

Agli antipodi del mondo, solo per amore

Lasciare tutto. Il proprio paese, i figli, gli amici, i riti quotidiani che si ripetono ogni giorno, da anni. Per amore.
Affrontare, senza ritorno, un viaggio di 25 ore, sull'oceano, per arrivare dall'altra parte del mondo, su un'isola in mezzo
al mare. Perché senti dentro qualcosa che non hai mai provato prima. Una storia da film romantico quella di Gerardo Forti,
un tarcentino maturo, posato, elegante. Senza grilli per la testa, che per tutta la vita ha fatto il camionista di tir, anche
se ha un modo di fare più britannico che friulano. La meta dei suoi desideri è una dolce signora di 60 anni, Elsa Barsi, una
professoressa di musica che insegna al college. Nella verde e lontanissima Nuova Zelanda, a 12 mila chilometri di distanza.
Agli esatti antipodi dell'Italia. Il loro amore, come due ragazzini adolescenti, sboccia su quella grande e misteriosa rete
globale che è internet. Su una chat-line. Poche parole, come si usa nel web. Frasi brevi, piene di punti di domanda. 'Come
ti chiami? Cosa fai nella vita? Che tempo fa da te?'. Poi la voglia di sentirsi ancora, di vedersi. 'Mi mandi una tua foto?
Quando ci riconnettiamo di nuovo?'. Vedersi in volto, con gli occhi che brillano. E scocca la scintilla. 'È stato come vedere
il sole' dice Gerardo'. Mi ha chiesto di andare a trovarla ma non avevo i soldi per il volo. Così mi ha mandato un assegno.
Sono salito su quell'aereo, per la prima volta nella mia vita. Appena l'ho vista ho capito che era l'unica donna del mio cuore.
Gerardo parte oggi per la terra dei suoi sogni, dopo aver sbrigato 6 mesi di pratiche burocratiche. 'Ci sposeremo, tra poche
settimane. Lei continuerà a lavorare, come maestra delle note. Io curerò l'orto. Le cucinerò pranzi squisiti, con le mie mani'.
Elsa è divorziata, ha tre ragazzi già grandi, proprio come Gerardo. Figlia di genitori italiani, emigrati tanti anni fa, è
una curiosa della rete. E la sua storia d'amore l'ha resa pubblica anche lì, nel mondo virtuale per eccellenza, con tanto
di foto, uno sfondo color rosa, pieno di fiorellini e fiocchetti. Quasi una bomboniera. 'Cosa rimpiangerò dell'Italia? Del
Friuli? Niente', dice Gerardo. 'Cosa mi aspetto? Di vivere finalmente la mia vita, l'amore della mia vita'. Una storia nata
su internet che cambia le esistenze di due persone, e delle famiglie che gli gravitano intorno. E che non possono che accettare
la 'dolce follia' di chi ha scelto di abbandonare la comoda via della certezza per un salto nel buio, che però non fa paura.
Prima di partire un saluto agli amici più cari, i ragazzi della Infostar, che lo hanno aiutato a montare la web-cam, per poter
vedere la sua bella Elsa, per risolvere i guai informatici che potevano tenerla lontana.

To the Antipodes - only for love. July 14 2006
To leave everything, town, children, the same daily rituals of years and years. All for love. To face, without return,
25 hours of air travel in order to arrive on the other side of the world where two small islands are in the middle of the
ocean. This is something he has never tried before.
This is a story you would find in a romantic film, of Gerardo Forti, a mature and elegant man of Tarcento, Italy. No
sudden whims about him, who for all his working life was an international truck driver, blessed with a more British way of
thinking than Friulano.
His goal was a sweet lady of 60 years, Elsa Barsi, a College teacher of music. In the distant and green nation 12 000
kms away in New Zealand. Across the great divide - the Antipodes.
Their love, like two recycled teenagers, bloomed on that great and mysterious global network - the internet. On a chat
programme. Brief sentences, sometimes short words only, questions - "What is your name?" "What do you do?"
"What is the weather like there?" " Do you have a photo?" Then you want to chat again - and again.
So it went on - constant chatting and laughing, until they decided that they wanted to meet. He has only a pension so Elsa
sent him a draft (which he later paid back), and he knew that she was the only person for him.
Today Gerardo leaves for the land of his dreams, after having spent 6 months finalising bureaucratic paperwork.
"We will marry as soon as we can, she will continue at College, and I will tend the house and garden. I will even
try to cook!"
Elsa is divorced with three adult children, just like Gerardo has. She is the daughter of Italian immigrants. Because
of her curiosity and interest in computer technology, she composed a webpage for us, telling our story, with lots of photos
on a rose-coloured background, full of little flowers and other ornaments. Almost like a wedding cake keepsake.
"Do you have any regrets about leaving Italy? Friuli?"
"Nothing."
"What lies ahead?"
"To live my life finally with the love of my life."
A story born on the internet which changed the lives of two people and their families which surround them.
